This is the third installment of our four-part series on “illogical instructions”. We have come to understand the role trust plays in our relationship with God. If you missed Part 2, click the link at the end of this post. The important part that bears repeating is that trusting God means that we submit to God’s plan by laying aside conventional wisdom, knowledge, experiences, and even past works of God to realize that God is doing a new thing, moving in a different way in our lives, or preparing us for a miracle. Sometimes, God will give us an illogical instruction that is outside of our knowledge, ability, wisdom, or experience. So far, we have seen how God builds our trust in Him through illogical instructions while in the midst of a battle and a move of God.

Use of Illogical instructions is a strategy God uses in our Christian development to build trust. This strategy is a reminder of God’s omniscience and our finite capabilities. If we release our ideas and will, obeying God’s illogical instruction helps us stay humble and recognize the all-sufficient, all-encompassing wisdom and ability of God. We continue our review of instances where God gives an illogical instruction, discover areas of increased trust, and note how God uses circumstance and our obedience to an illogical instruction to bring about healing that demonstrates the power and ability of God.

An illogical instruction causes us to choose between God’s wisdom and man’s wisdom.

This week, we are looking at illogical instructions that lead to healing. We know from the New Testament that healing is inclusive of physical, mental, and financial illness. Isaiah 53:4-5 says, “Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds, we are healed.” John 10:10 states, “The thief cometh not but for to steal, and kill, and destroy: I am come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly.” Finally, 3 John 1:2 states, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” These three scriptures show that illness is not just physical, but mental and financial too. If Jesus died for us to have and live this kind of life but we are not, something is broken, amiss, or sick, and it requires healing. There are several stories in the Bible where individuals received their healing through an illogical instruction.

In the Old Testament, Naaman was healed of leprosy after obeying an illogical instruction to dip himself in the Jordan River seven times. In the New Testament, Jesus heals the 10 lepers through an illogical instruction to go and show themselves to the priests. The instruction was simply to start walking. What, no oil, rolling on the floor, chanting scripture, laying on of hands? No, as they obeyed (walked) the illogical instruction, they were healed. There are times when God wants to perform a miracle while ensuring that only He gets the glory. We only receive these miracles when we are obedient to the illogical instruction. It means that we have to ignore discouraging voices that tell us we are fanatic, that we need to engage in some ritualistic religious practices or cause us to question whether we really heard God in the matter. God allows us to be in impossible situations where we have to choose Him and what He said over-reliance on our knowledge or the knowledge of those around us. When God wants to perform a miracle healing, He will give an illogical instruction.

If you need healing in any area of your life and God desires to give you a miracle, expect an illogical instruction to precede your breakthrough. It doesn’t matter if the nature of healing is physical, mental, or financial. I remember a minister friend who wanted to sell his home. At the time, it was a buyer’s market. This friend’s home stayed on the market for some time. After praying about the situation, my friend shared how God instructed him to raise the price of the home. Now, I’m no real estate expert, but I’m pretty sure this is not the move to make during a buyer’s market. Nevertheless, my friend followed the illogical instruction, received a contract within the week, and sold the home in 30 days. This is an example of how God takes the foolish things to confound the wise. When we receive an illogical instruction, expect that God is doing a new thing, an out of the ordinary thing in our lives. Healings are not just about physical healings; included are all the areas for which Christ suffered as identified in the referenced scriptures.
