In honor of Mother’s Day, I reflect on the things I wish I’d said or done more to show my mother I care. I hope that if you are able to do these things with your mother, you will make time before it’s too late.
Mom, As I reflect on the totality of who you are, there are so many things I wish. Like, I wish I had paid more attention to the joy and ingredients you put in those tall holiday cakes and savory soul food dishes. I wish I’d written down that teacake recipe. I wish I had paid more attention to how hard you worked, how tired you were when you got home, and how you never complained about it. I wish I had watched more and helped you create your beautiful flower and vegetable gardens.
I wish I had never spoken of things I didn’t understand. I wish I had noticed much earlier in life that you truly had an entrepreneurial spirit. I wish I had known and understood more about your childhood and the things in your past that shaped you; that made you, you. I wish I would have never stopped calling you every Sunday morning to talk. I wish I wouldn’t have pretended not to be home when you came by just to see me and trim my bushes. I wish I would have traveled with you more. I wish I would have taken the time to observe you and just ask how your day went.
I wish I would have asked you your biggest regret and your biggest accomplishment. I wish I would have sat at your feet and pushed you more about your experiences growing up in the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. I wish I would have told you more how much I admired you and appreciated you. I wish I would have pushed you more to step into your ministry calling. I wish I would have told you more that everything is going to be alright. I wish I would have done more to make you smile every single day.
I wish I had more time.
To a mother that was full of creativity, life, laughter, possibility, and Jesus, I salute you this Mother’s Day. I see you and appreciate you and the sacrifices you made for me to live a better life and achieve beyond your achievements.
Happy Mother’s Day, Mom
